One Dimensional Man
ONE DIMENSIONAL MAN
In 1964, Herbert Marcuse in his book “One Dimensional Man: Studies in the Ideology of Advanced Industrial Society”, described the state of society under capitalism. One Dimensional Man means someone who is subjected to a new kind of totalitarianism in the form of consumerist and technological capitalism. Marcuse considers Rationalism as a form of oppression which denies the possibility of change.
Marxism believes that change occurs in history as a result of internal conflict due to discontent. A man under capitalism is a type of blissful slaves they are willingly obeying a system which makes him rationally irrational. He cannot deviate from the general behaviour. He cannot make conflicts that make him multidimensional and capable of change.
For Marcuse, One Dimensional Man is closely related to both Consumerism and Mass media. These prevent man from being resistive and make conflicts.
